Artist's Comments

I was visiting ~KassyNaVerdis the other day and she showed me a beautiful watercolor how-to book by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law (who is AWESOME). So after some zoo sketching, we went home and watercolored like mad!

I'm learning how to use them like you're supposed to now! 8D I'm actually PAINTING with them and not just...coloring with them. So these are some techniques I picked up from the book and played with:

1. Salted the background, wet-on-wet for the giraffe.
2. GIRAFARIE...*cough* Did a wash of purple shadows, then a wash of color, then blotted away for highlights. (Also has some iridescent medium to make it shimmer.)
3. Wash over the whole area, then did a second coat for shadows, then blotted away the highlights. (I LOVE that blotting technique! It's like drawing with kneaded eraser in charcoal.)
4. Purple shadows and yellow highlights. Yay color!
5. MERAFFE! Purple shadows, washes of color, then hydrogen peroxide for the spots and background.

Oh my gosh I really like Giraffe #3 for some reason with it lying down and that color scheme.... *bites knuckles* Very very nice.

.....I just don't know how yet....

Hydrogen peroxide... damn, I need to try that! :B
And they look neat, I love what you do with watercolors here. (They all seem to have shorter necks and more horse-ish anatomy, but still).

The peroxide was really fun to play with. You put down a wash, and while the paint's still wet, drip or dab it with the peroxide, and the pigment in the paint goes, "Noooooo, not peroxide! D8"

(You're right about that. The giraffes were being difficult that day and moving a lot, so there was a lot of fill-in-the-blank with anatomy.)

3. suits your style very well :)

yay for watercolour! (i only have the pencils for it but you can create awesome effects -> even without salting or such)

#3 is awesome. I love how glossy its coat looks, and the way the muscles bunch underneath.

I absolutely love that one in the bottom left hand corner. I would totally love a full picture of it, man. Though some of them, particularly the one in the middle, seem to have short-ish necks that make then look kind of horse-like.

Peroxide actually works like that? I never even thought it would actually do that.
